Born of the Spirit

God is a spirit who created mankind in His image and likeness with a spirit that has a body. Most people see themselves as a body that has a spirit, while the reverse is true. The purpose of being born again is not only to receive the gift of eternal life, but as a new creation in Christ, a new spirit where our spirit is alive in Christ.

In His Image

Genesis 1:27 – God created you in His image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Question: What is the image of God like? “Jesus said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24).

The emphasis here is that you were created in the image of God with a spirit!

Genesis 2:7 – And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the earth and breathed into His nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul. (Ge. 2:7)

The emphasis is that your spirit has a soul- which is made up of your mind, will, and emotions. When you die and pass on, does your spirit die? No, it goes to be with the Lord. Your body is raised at the time of your resurrection at which time God will give us a new body that is eternal and incorruptible. (1 Cor. 15:52-54)

Born of the Spirit – Regeneration

Jesus said “Except a man be born again of water and f the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:3-5).

The emphasis is that it is only the Spirit of God that makes your spirit alive in Him. God wants your spirit to come alive and live again to be recipients of the love of God.

Jesus said that unless your spirit is alive, you cannot see the things of God. Why is this? Because God is a spirit! You cannot see God with your natural eyes nor know him after the flesh, but after the spirit. You spirit is created by God for fellowship with Him.

Jesus also said,”The wind blows where it wills and you hear the sound thereof, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

The emphasis is that the Spirit of God is often Biblically referred to as the wind or breath of God. (See Acts 2:2) You spirit when it is born again is like the wind. No one can see it, but it is present. This is the new birth of your spirit! Most people think of a new birth as having eternal life. Although that is true, your spirit is born again by the living God to be alive in God. This is what it means to be a new creation,

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, behold old things are passed away, behold all things are new. (2 Cor. 5:17).

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take the stony heart out of your flesh and I will give you a new heart.” (Ezek. 36:26)

You spirit that is born again is to come forth in you. You are a spirit with a body, not a body with a spirit!

When you were born again, your spirit came alive to know the things of God, Paul said, “But the natural man received not the tings of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto Him, nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Cor. 2:13).

To “spiritually discern the things of God” that enables us to distinguish His thoughts and ways from our thoughts and feelings requires that our spirit connects with His!

It is your spirit that God wants to ignite with His light. David said “the spirit of a man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parks of the belly (Proverbs 20:27).

When Jesus said to let your light shine, He is not saying “Hey, do good works so that others can see your good deeds!” Nor is he saying that you proclaim your goodness and holiness because you are “righteous and pure” before God. (That’s self righteousness) When Jesus said to let your light shine, he means to let the radiance of your spirit shine that reveals God’s love and life that has infused your spirit with His. The call is to, Arise and shine for your light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you (Is. 60:1).

The New Testament Covenant

When Jesus died on the cross, he not only died as the sacrificial Lamb of God for our sins, but to restore us back into fellowship with Him. In other words our spirit has been “quickened” (made alive) that we may know Him in spirit and in truth as in the beginning.  In the beginning Adam and Eve walked in the presence of God.

It is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin that enables us have the boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19-22) “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father” (Eph. 2:18).

It is not your body that has access to the Father that enters into His presence, but your spirit. “Even when we were dead in sins, has quickened (made alive) us together, and made us to sit in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. (Eph. 2:6)

God loves to walk in our Soul – mind, heart and emotions. This is the nature of our spirit and when God walks in you, he makes these areas alive in the things of God.

And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God: as God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people” (God walked in the beginning in the garden of Eden for fellowship with Adam and Eve, now He dwells in us and desires to FATHER US. )

Supporting Scriptures

We are not in the Flesh but the Spirit – “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit, that is if the Spirit of God dwells in you” ( Ro. 8:9).

● The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God (Ro. 8:16)

In conclusion – How do we serve God?

With our spirit: Paul tells us, “For God is my witness whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son that without ceasing I make mentions of you always in prayer (Ro. 1: 9).

Most Christians serve God in the natural. That is because they see themselves as a body that has occasional spiritual experiences. Thus they go from one blessing to another. Going from one meeting and ministry to the next, looking for the next fix! Those that allow their spirit to rise and shine with a body, have occasional human experiences. Their spiritual life comes from a living dynamic relationship with God where their spirit is in touch with God who is a spirit.

LET YOUR SPIRIT OUT – ITS CRYING OUT FOR LIBERTY

In the next session called “The Gift of the Holy Spirit” we will see how the Holy Spirit ignites our spirit with the divine nature of God to live in the Spirit that also puts our canal nature under subjection.
